I use it in a few places with some 8 and 16 port USB serial devices.  It’s a cheap, workable solution.  conserver is free, just run it on your PoP’s utility box, then spend a few hundred for the USB to serial device(s).

I suspect one could also make a very tiny version with something like a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone and a USB to serial jobby.
