People are typically using the term LNS (L2TP Network Server) to
descripe a tunnel end-point device which termiantes L2TP tunnels,
inside which they terminate PPP (subscriber) sessions. These are
historically PPPoA sessions.
People also typically using the term BNG (Broadband Network Gateway)
to describe a device performing a similar function but typically for
PPPoE subscriber sessions insead of PPPoE. Also BNGs are typically
used in either scenario of terminating PPP sessions inside L2TP or
terminating PPPoE directly, for LNS devices this is less common and
connections are usually aggregated by a LAC (L2TP Access
Concentrator). Hopefully soon BNG will more commonly refer to IPoE
subsribers as we try to get rid of PPP.
Cheers,
James.
