Yes, but I believe the discussion was around optical backplanes within a 
device, not between devices.

Compass EOS is the only player I am aware of that does optical within a 
chassi.

It seems there were copper advancements in the meantime that made copper 
still scale well for backplane connectivity, and that's why existing 
vendors have kept using copper traces switch fabric connectivity instead 
of going optical.
