Thank you all for your comments. I got the switch to boot into Denali by simply power cycling it. It seems that I was TOO patient. The switch wasn't upgrading in the background; it was hanging.
Why Denali? From various articles which I have read online, Cisco wants to move from the 3.7 train to a single IOS-XR code like Denali. This is the reason I moved to it. We are also interested in possibly using NETCONF and APIC-EM. And, no, we do not need MPLS. In fact I wish the Catalyst team would learn from the Nexus team and use a features model. This way you can enable only what you need.
Another issue I found with Denali is that our AIR-2802i no longer are seen in cdp neighbor. I have a TAC ticket open about this and am working with the 3850 and Wireless team. According to Cisco's matrix, Denali 16.3.5b SHOULD work with the 2802i.

Is that MPLS like "Label Switching" (in which case it looks like a big WOW on Cat3K) or MPLS like "VRF-Lite" ?
