I've used the vic-2fxo with POTS service from sbc/ameritech
to gateway calls to the PSTN in the past. In the worst case, i've
used it when i know there are about 10 mi (16km) of cabling between
me and the nearest fiber hut where I could possibly be put on
a fiber trunk path (usually a lightspan here in ameritech land).
i did have problems a few times with it not detecting
disconnection, but i think that was more of a gateway issue
and less of a vic issue.
