[cisco-voip] Unplug publisher during upgrade/hardware replacement?

I am planning on upgrading our cluster from 3.3(4) to 4.1(2) and I am not sure whether or not it would be better to follow the instructions, which say to unplug the existing publisher, then plug in the new publisher, then start the install -or- to basically install the new publisher offline. Do bad things happen when the publisher comes online and can't see the subscribers for a while? We have a call centre which will have to remain off-line while the publisher is down and we'd rather avoid that if at all possible.

What have others done with similar hardware replacement upgrades?
