[cisco-voip] VG224 advice

Why would the only choice be SCCP if you are using faxes and modems?

One big difference is that with SCCP you have feature codes and MGCP you do
not. Feature codes allow you to do call pickup, speed dials, etc. So if you
are using analog phones, then you may especially want to use SCCP.
Otherwise, either will do. I don't believe fax-relay is supported for SCCP
on the VG224, but I'm not 100% certain on that. If true and you need to do
faxing over a WAN connection using G729 you are out of luck and would have
to use MGCP or use G711 with passthrough for at least the fax calls.

If you are going to use the 12.4T code anyway, won't be using fax-relay, and
will have some analog phones perhaps go ahead and use SCCP. If it is purely
for faxes and modems then either would do but perhaps MGCP would be more
appropriate. That's my 2 cents.

If you are considering fax machines or modems, your only choice (that will
work) is SCCP. If it is analog phones only, then consider yourself lucky!

We recently received our first VG224 which I am getting it setup, but I am
wondering what are the differences in adding it as an MGCP device verses
adding it as a SCCP device in terms of both operation and administrative
overhead. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone,

Brian
