you also need HW xcode when you want to make conference call between LAN users and WAN users. LAN users come with g711 and WAN with g729... so you need xcode to mix this in one voice stream...
u can use PVDMs on 2800/3800 for this...

Hi,
IP phones support g711 and g729 codecs, so the can utilize
both codecs depending on the region settings, for exam
inside region 711, between regions 729. So transcoding not involved in
the calls between regions.
Where we need transcoding. For example in the main side you have CRS
Which couldn't use g729 codec, but some calls are made from g729 region
to it. This is primary use of hw transcoding.

Subject: [cisco-voip] Transcoder config
I have a CCM 4.1.3 install on my lan/wan. All wan site are configured
in
the CCM as g729 codecs.
I am wondering what use is the transcoder config in the call manager
for?
Also, where is the transcoding taking place
on the CM when there are 711 and 729 phones? Is there a limitation
where I
need to look at a hardware transcoder?
What is the typicla situations where a hw transcoder is needed?
Thanks
bob
