[cisco-voip] Advise for recommended voice gateways

No. The telco controls inbound calls. e.g. PRI 1 - circuit 001, PRI 2 circuit 002. The telco will send all inbound calls down PRI 1 ascending and then PRI 2 if PRI 1 becomes full. All you have to do is control outbound calls.
1) Outbound PRI RG - PRI 2 then PRI 1 in RG (configured for descending channel use in Call Mgr)
2) PRI RL contains Outbound PRI RG
My PRI's are not nearly full so it works out well for redundancy.

This does sound like the way we would like to do this, how have you done this within call manager, do you have an inbound RG and outbound RG with both gateways in. Also do you use SRST at your main site should you have a total network failure.

My main locations usually have 2 PRI's and 2 gateways as well. Each PRI has their own D channel so although they work together they can operate alone if one were to fail. The telco normally sends inbound down one PRI ascending and I typically send outbound down the other PRI descending to use both PRI's efficiently. I am also able to just physically unplug one PRI and calls will start coming inbound on the other PRI. Same for the outbound because the Route Group contains both PRI's.

So in effect one of the gateways will just be used as a backup or only if all of the PRI channels on the primary gateway are busy.

When I started doing things, we wanted to be able to test each gateway indepently with special access codes. There was no way to include a gateway in more than one route group at the time (may have changed) so we created a route group for each gateway as Scott suggested and then put them all into a RouteList. This way, my test patterns access the appropriate route group /gateway for testing.

I don't know your particular setup but I would most likely put both in a single RG. Or 2 different RG and one RL.

Following on from this question, what would be the best way to implement these two new voice gateways, would it best to have all phones pointing to one gateway and to use the second for failover or to split up the phones on each gateway so that both are being used, obviously I would then need to set up additional partitions and CSS.

It really depends on how much expansion you will do down the road. If you're just running a single PRI E1 in each router you could use a small 28xx series router. Basically any of your x8xx ISR routers will take you where you want to go.

I am looking for 2 new voice gateways to add to our existing IPT infrastructure at our HQ, we currently have 13 remote sites all with their own local H323 gateways, and we will be adding a further 12 remote sites throughout the year up to around 250 users in total, plus we have about 50 phones at our HQ, the two voice gateways will be for our HQ, for rolling out up to 500 users and also to be used for failover for the remote sites. They will be used solely for voice. We will have two ISDN30 one on each gateway and they will be housed in different building on the same site.
Just wondering what anyone can recommend for this setup, also bearing in mind for future expansion and technologies such as SIP integration.
