Reminds me of IBM's early networking days, when we said that if IBM ran the
telephone system, everyone would have to hang up to install a new phone
anywhere.
Say what you will about inertia and lack of innovation, the US PSTN was a
marvel of reliability. The lowly 500 handset was nearly indestructible, as
was most of the infrastructure. During the hurricane season of 2004, we
were without power for about 3 weeks at home, but the telephone (and DSL)
never skipped a beat.
