I'm sure this was covered in a previous thread.
It's meant to prevent loops. For example, with message notification, if Unity receives a call from a port that is marked as message notification, it is dropped. Or something like that.

Subject: [cisco-voip] Unity - CallManager integration FLUKE?
Hi,
In the UTIM tool that integrates Unity - CallManager, is it necessary to fill up the 'Extension' column in the 'Ports' tab? Even when I keep the Extension field empty, my integration works just fine... is it a fluke?
Please let me know.
Thanks
-Zevier.
