I leave significant digits on the gateway at 10, and make all my number
manipulation in CallManager. In my case, however, my extension DNs are
not at all related to the assigned DIDs and only about 10 percent of all
telephones even have a DID. By having a separate translation pattern for
each assigned DID, I have very granular control over DID assignments.
For example, in the DFW metroplex, I have two blocks of 50 numbers, one
in Dallas, one in Fort Worth. I have 197 telephones in 10 offices for
which those would be local calls and 43 more phones in 6 more area for
which those would be interlata LD calls, however only 62 of those 240
phones have (or even need) DIDs assigned.
