Samples of trans-coding needed:


1. you have branches connecting to central site at G729 and want to
conference from branch to HQ -- onnet across the IP wan -- you need
trans-coding because the software conference bridge with call manager
does not support G729 -- That is if you don't configure some DSP
resources at HQ for hardware conferencing that does support G711 and
g729, in which case you won't need trans-coding.


2. Another example is when you have a unity express voicemail solution
in a branch. Supports G711 only so PSTN calls to voicemail will work
fine but as soon as you have an onnet call at G729 to the person in a
branch and it rolls to voicemail you will need trans-coding in a
branch

Transcoding would be used if you were using IPCCx for example since it
only does G711 and your Remote sites are doing G729 to the central
site.
This will allow the Transcoding from remote site to IPCCx agent.

You can also use DSP resources on a Router for Conference calling, but
they need to be configured to do that.

we have a central site and 4 remote sites.  we only have cm servers
and
unity server at the central site.  we put a router at the central site
for transding overflow if needed.  my question is why would we need a
router for transcoding overflow.  Someone told me that it would be for
conference calls on the system.  can someone help me understand this.
our unity server is set for g729
