[cisco-voip] SIP 79x0 phones and SIP on CM in general

I'm with ya. SIP is a very easy protocol to debug. It is simple in
nature. It only supports like 16 features. It is standards based
rather then Cisco based.

All in all I have no reason to upgrade yet. Once Cisco works on SIP v2
v3 v4 etc. and adds all the features to it I can see it being a benefit.

I think (and could be wrong) it uses less memory / flash so you could
use phones longer after support is done (but like I said this is only a
guess).

Subject: [cisco-voip] SIP 79x0 phones and SIP on CM in general

I'm curious what the disadvantages are of using a 79x0 as opposed to a
79x1 phone for SIP. As I understand it I'll need to add the SIP dialplan
and assign it to each phones however this does not seem like that big of
a deal when faced with upgrading hardware? I understand they lack the
horsepower to load the KPML however what else am I loosing if my clients
hang onto their old phones for SIP?

Also, pardon my ignorance but what am I gaining by running SIP as
opposed to SCCP? CM will act as a SCCP/SIP gateway so what else do I
gain by going pure SIP for my endpoints? I'm not completely onboard with
the theory that SIP is going to be the savior of IPT, IPC or whatever
you'd like to call it, so far it's just been a thorn in my side. I'd be
more apt to jump on the bandwagon if someone can explain what all the
hype is (third party phones excluded; AFAIK, they screw you with the
licensing in the end so nothing really gained there)? FYI... I'm not
completely ignorant of SIP but certainly NOT an expert yet and I'm just
not getting it I guess. I know this is a pretty broad question so I'd
appreciate any insight you can provide.
