[cisco-voip] does anyone see seperate long distance trunks any more?

I'm doing some redesign of my dial-plan and have sorted my route groups into local and long distance, however, they contain the same trunks.
This was done on the off chance we would purchase local and long distance service from seperate providers.
However, with the age of digital (and even analog I would assume), if I were to purchase my long distance service from another provider, would they simply not 'pic' the long distance from my local service provider, eliminating the need for seperate trunks?
I guess I'm just wondering if I need to do this level of seperation any more?
