Unity Connection is the appliance model Unity. I'm sure they'd
like to merge the two versions but that's probably a ways out.

How so? In UM mode you are required [or so I thought] to have the
message store off-box anyways. In that case, an appliance version of
the voice mail server component makes perfect sense since your e-mail
infrastructure (and therefore message store) should be a distinct entity
anyhow.
