Does the OS Update 2000-4-4a change the Smart Array controller firmware?

We upgraded 8 servers from OS 2000-2-7sr6 to 2000-4-4asr4. Part of the
procedure was to power down and break a mirror for a backout plan.

Old Smart Array 5 Servers (DL380G3)

If we power down and replace a mirror drive when it boots up we get
"Press F1 (Default) to enable Interim Recovery Mode" then booted
normally. Event Viewer shows the mirrors re-generated successfully.

Newest Smart Array 5i Servers

If we power down and replace a mirror drive when it boots up we get
"Drive Array Not Configured Drive positions appear to have been
changed." PXE DHCP BOOT. Workaround was to restore removed mirrored
drives and boot into Windows and then hot-swap the drives. The mirrors
would re-generate as seen in Event Viewer.

I can't find a HP document on what is happening here.

I called HP and they thought maybe it was a firmware bug? Does the OS
Update 2000-4-4a change the Smart Array controller firmware?
