No the Phones doesnot negotiate. I have a H323 trunk thorugh a gatekeeper which ends to a gateway using alaw. what happens is that the Phone runs with ulaw and the callmanager is doing the conversion for it. if I disconnect the callmanager the call is muted so I conclude from this that the callmanger is doing something for the call. also BTW I cheched the call on the gateway and I find it using alaw so there is a conversion from ulaw to alaw happening on the CM.

That's a good question. I thought it would be a service parameter but I don't see one.
I think the phone will automatically negotiate with the gateway to choose the alaw or ulaw but I don't know this for sure.
Maybe you can't change the companding type for IP phone to IP phone calls.
