Why not BARS backup your production server, build a new 4.1 server in
VM, do the restore, then upgrade from there?
That way you avoid any potential issues caused by the plugin.

my plan would be install the client plugin --> convert to VM -->
uninstall the plugin --> reboot and then I have my live VM for testing.
