Recently a customer has complained that when employees
leave each other voicemail over WAN calls, the
recipient hears the messages almost as if the caller
was inhaling helium beforehand.

I don't know what to make of this.

I've had another site with the exact same setup with
no similar issues.

Anybody encounter an issue like this?
