Hi Kevin,
You need CDP to be enabled indeed in order to have the router be able to
recognize the phones and give power accordingly or not.

Subject: [cisco-voip] Power over Ethernet
Okay so this is a newbie question, but I can't seem to find the answer.
I have an MGCP Gateway on a 2811
this is a small 5 person office so they have an Ethernet module on the
router. (NM-16ESW) with a power card (PPWR-DCARD-16ESW).
This weekend I tried to cut over the site and I can't get power to the
phones.
the Config looks like this:
Interface FastEthernet1/1
decription Sue's Phone and PC
switchport access Vlan 4
switchport voice vlan 3
duplex full
speed 100
power inline auto
mls qos cos override
spanning-tree portfast
according to the router my options are power inline (auto, never). Do I
need cdp enabled on the port to detect the phone? How do I get power to
the phones?
Much appreciated
Kevin Dunn
