[cisco-voip] Phone Proxy?

That version of the ASA is probably where they are migrating the PhoneProxy
features. Since we won't even stop selling PhoneProxy til later this year
there's plenty of time for people to migrate.

I'd assume that the release of 8.0.4 code for the ASA would come before or
at least around the time we stop selling the PhoneProxy but I'm not going to
hold my breathe. If you are serious about this though I'd get a demo unit
from your account team to play with. It is a very cool product.

Just noticed something when I went to look for version 8.0.4 for the ASA as
per Cisco EoS/EoL notice for PhoneProxy, well.. um it does not appear that
8.0.4 has been released yet. The last release I see available anyway is
8.0.3.ED, its probably just me but I find that to be a tad funny.

I have seen phones using a 'phone proxy' before and I have seen others
reference it here and there. But one thing I am not certain of is whether
phone proxy is something specific from Cisco, or is more of a generic term
if you will that applies to a function? From what I am seeing via the
oracle that is google, it seems that phone proxy is or was both a cisco
product as well as a general term. But most references which use it as a
term seem to be centered around SIP and asterisk, which is some what
understandable.

I did see that Cisco has/had a Cisco Unified PhoneProxy 1.0 but that it is
going EoS and EoL with the recommendation to migrate to ASA 5500 8.0.4 and
later.

I am looking to leverage a phone proxy for testing a couple of things, and
it just so happens we do have a ASA5520 so this may be a viable option for
me and simply the best and quickest way for me to go.

However I like to hear from others of course. Any other products that serve
this function, good or bad. Any best practices or personal thoughts on the
subject would be appreciated.
