As somone mentioned the exmerge tool from Microsoft allows this: http://kbalertz.com/260037/Remove-Message-Exchange-Using-ExMerge-Utility.aspx
However this does not work for exchange 2007 so if you are in a UM environment with that version you are SOL as things currently stand
This process while not exceedingly difficult is manual and would have to be done for each time a message needed to be deleted

Ah, very true, I was oversimplifying. But, as far as I'm aware, the
reference has to be removed from each mailbox individually, there's no
way to remove them all in one shot.
