[cisco-voip] Patches, Upgrades, Service Releases.......

Hello group

I feel like I am really confused by all the Patches, Upgrades, and
Service Release stuff related to the Cisco Call manager applications and
CRS applications.

I am hoping someone can offer some advice and that all of this is a lot
simpler to understand than it appears.  

For example, 

How do I know when I need to go out and get the Cisco certified windows
updates for my various servers?

How do I know the prerequisites for any patches or upgrades?  I don't
want to just install something and then break the whole system.
