[cisco-voip] Unity UM talking to a remote Exchange server across WAN

The design requirements are there because, among other things, Unity is
pulling data in real time from exchange while users are on the phone
with it and keeping MWIs in sync. Even if you can straighten out the
delivery problem, you're going to have a negative user experience one
way or another if you can't bring Unity to the mailboxes or the
mailboxes to Unity.

Is CUE an option for these users? Or, maybe you could create a separate
'voice mail only' mailbox for these users on the local exchange server,
and then setup IMAP access to those mailboxes in the remote user's
Outlook clients?
