The number of line instances per button can be changed on the 7931 it is 1 by default however if you go under the line settings in the configuration and change the parameter "Maximum Number of Calls" to > 1, call waiting etc will now work. Shame it is not set to 4 like a 7960 by default, but not that hard to change.

Subject: [cisco-voip] 7931 a cautionary tale
Browsing the Cisco websites to view all the new models of phones and looking for something that could replace the very dated 7914 expansion module, I came apon the 7931. The phone has a smaller display and a paper insert for line labels, but costs much less then a 796X and 7914. I bought one to test and found that it is not a perfect fit. The 7931 can handle only one line per button meaning that you have to jump through alot of hoops to accommodate call waiting. It can be accomplished but the 2 phone set ups are far from apples for apples. Just thought someone looking to buy a new 7931 might find this nugget useful before they make a purchase.
