Kenneth, a colleague here, just mentioned another option that sounds 
even more user friendly, albeit still requires user training:

enable BLF and then use onhook dialing.  On 3rd gen phones when you do 
onhook dialing it lists previously dialed numbers.  with BLF call lists 
enabled it shows the status of each number in the list.

you can achive this with existing equipment with the only slight change 
that user must use onhook dialing.
