The key thing is, you're not tied to java. You can do your server-side 
scripts in whatever you wish, be that php, ruby, python, asp etc. as 
long as you push the proper xml content to the phone.

And as far as that xml goes, you don't need any specific xml libraries 
for that, you can just "roll it by hand". That's what I did, in php, and 
even if it wasn't too "professional" it was simple, quick and it was 
working.
