[cisco-voip] Still confused on Unity Time Sync

Hi Micah,

I think your Unity will pull the time from your Domain Controller (DC) as
a member server in the domain. It will ignore the Publisher as a Time
server in your configuration. You should configure DC to use an external
time source though.

At the end, your Publisher and DC server will point to a couple of
external time sources. The subscribers and IPCCX will synchronize with the
publisher and the Unity/Exchange will synchronize with DC.

Subject: [cisco-voip] Still confused on Unity Time Sync

Hello All

I am trying to understand and confirm where my Unity server is pulling its
time from. My CCMs and IPCC servers are all working correctly. They are
using the NTP service and the configuration that is specified in the
ntp.conf file on each server.

We are using Unity 4.2. This server (Win Server 2000) is part of our
Domain because we are using Unified Messaging tied to our exchange server.

When I went to a command prompt on the Unity server and tried to do "net
time" I get and error message "System Error 5 has occurred".

I have read and re-read this document from Cisco and I am still lost.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_configuratio
n_example09186a008009470f.shtml

Some other time documents from Microsoft mentioned the registry entries
under W32Time so I went there on the Unity server to see what was
configured.

In
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters I
found a reference to the IP address of my Call Manager Publisher server.

My guess is that our install partner hard coded the Unity server to point
to our publisher instead of just letting it pull from the domain
controller (pulling from the domain controller appears to be the default
setup when using the W32Time service.) I can not find any reference in
Cisco docs to these registry entries, and the Microsoft reference seems to
be only for Server 2003 not Server 2000.

It seems to be working and the time matches across all my systems. Has
anyone seen this setup before? It sure is proving difficult to get an
understanding of our configuration, when even the initial install from our
partner does not seem to match the documentation.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.
