[cisco-voip] VOIP in Ethiopia

I've had this problem before. I just tell the provider that what I run
inside of the building, pass the demark, is none of they're business.
Then, I have crazy customers who don't know what they are talking about,
but think they do and think VoIP is insecure. I tell them its only IP
inside the building, not on the "internet" makes it simple.

My suggestion would be to tell the provider to activate the PRI and for
them to forget about the backside technology.

My current issue is that I'm doing a move for a customer to a new
building, and at the old building we just used FXO's, and now we want to
use PRI. Somewhere someone mentioned to the Telco we want to use VOIP,
and now they refuse to activate the PRI. I mean the PRI is for PSTN and
not for VOIP. I need another company name to just proof to them that
there is someone using it. I'm sure there must be someone using VOIP in
Ethiopia

My previous employer had an office in Addis Ababa and while we weren't
doing voip, connectivity there is horrible. Even when we had to lodge
visiting employees in the Hilton their internet was not stable and that
was one of the more expensive western places there.

Hi Louis,

Not in Ethiopia, however my experience in other countries in Africa has
learned me that the availability of reliable connections is heaviliy
depending on the location: Capitals and economic centres have
international connections via landline or aggregted VSAT and are capable
of running Voip or even Video over IP. Prepare for high circuit costs
though.

I am currently doing a video over IP project with VSAT connections into
Angola, Congo, Cameroon and Nigeria. Though the costs are high, the
service is possible at a fair quality, even if the latency is huge (over
400 ms).

If you move away from the main cities it will be an entirely different
story: then probably you need your private VSAT connection, which is a
costly affair, I don't think there will be network connections out of
Addis Abeba or any other main city in Ethiopia.

My 5 cents...

Best regards,

Has anyone had any experience with VOIP in Ethiopia?
