Ryan nailed it.  A bit more insight:

2nd gen phones take time directly from cm.  they send datetimerequest to 
CM, get datetimeresponse, and use that time.

3rd gen phones take GMT from cm.  they then apply timezone shift locally 
based on (1)configuration and (2)hard coded tables built into the phone 
load.

Hopefully this helps to clarify why we identify 2nd/3rd gen phones so 
much.  I tried to clarify the generations and associated models in the 
wiki page as well.
