We're running 7 with 722 on our 79X5's and haven't experienced this issue

G722 may not sound as you expect without a new handset. The older
handsets that shipped pre-G722 didn't have speaker/mics fully capable of
doing G722 so you may be hearing that. A true test of G722 could be done
using a 7942/62/45/65/75 as those units all shipped with the wideband
handsets.
G729 is audibly different than 711 even for voice, but that's just the
way it is.

I agree. I try to standardise on G711 (and G729 over the WAN). I thought
G722 sounded tinny also.

We have had tinny issues when going to other codecs like g729 and
g722. So we pretty much use g711. Plus it plays better with ipccx.
