[cisco-voip] gatekeepers - when, why, how?

I am inquiring to the BU about SAF on VG224. I should have an official answer soon.

Nothing was broken, was looking for direction to use either a flat VLAN or point-to-point links for a stack of them. Consensus was point-to-point links.

I hear ya. Pretty strange. I mean, if it was there and NOT listed in the feature navigator OK. But it's listed in the feature navigator. I think that's one thing that people out there use as a reference.

But I don't want to cry foul to loudly. They might take it out and say, "There, it's not there any more." :(

Shhhhhh.

I think they’re just being lazy. Was there something with EIGRP that wasn’t working on the VG224 that you were requesting help with?

TAC guy’s aren’t perfect. Sometimes they’re just looking for the easy way out. The developer that complied the IOS had to specifically include the EIGRP/Routing libraries. Think of a IOS access point, now obviously EIGRP is not support on that because they didn’t choose to compile the feature into the code.

Pretty strange stuff.

I opened a TAC case. They (a non-US TAC engineer) told me because it was not on the VG224 data sheet it was not supported. They also sent me a quote (not sure where it was from) that basically stipulated that even though it has the code, and it will run, they don't test it. I asked for escalation, and was sent to a US TAC engineer who explained things a little further.

Basically, I think the jist was this....the voice team doesn't test EIGRP functionality on the VG224. Doesn't mean it's not going to work, or it's going to stop working. And, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't get help if you have problems. However, if they find out that the problem you are having is ONLY on the VG224 platform and doesn't affect any other platform, it more than likely won't get fixed.

This lack of EIGRP support was confirmed by several other sources via our account team. But they also said there are plenty of people running EIGRP stub on VG224s all over the world. ;)

And yes, I pointed out the fact that EIGRP STUB was on the VG224 platform feature navigator. Still no go.

Oh, I did request clarification on the "redundancy" support that is in the Q&A and I was referred to either BVI or static routes.

What makes you say EIGRP is not supported on a VG224?

Thanks Mike. Definitely clears up the configuration steps and I'll have to read up a bit more on whether a device should be a forwarder or a client, but it still doesn't mention anything about supported devices. Last I talked with the TAC, EIGRP routing was not supported on the VG224 (even stub, although it's listed in the feature navigator), so if SAF is anything like EIGRP (which it sounds like it is, I'm guessing the VG224 team might likely say no to this as well. :(

Lelio,

Take a look at this, it might help a little:

Try this:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/8x/netstruc.html
#wp1155951

It's from the SRND so it should be more descriptive.

Can you provide additional information on how this can be useful in a
voice environment? Configurations, etc? The two links don't have
much, and one basically just punts:

"
Q. I understand SAF can greatly simplify my voice-over-IP (VoIP)
deployment. Where can I find more information on how to deploy SAF
with my Unified Communications 8.0 application?
A. Please contact the Voice Technology Group through your account
representative or reseller for more information or visit
http://www.cisco.com/go/saf.
"

Are you in the Voice Technology Group? Can we consider this a
"contact"? :)
