well, i think i got this cracked. interesting working on new stuff....
essentially, a fresh out of the box etherswitch module boots into "rommon" mode of sorts, not into console mode. there is no configuration whatsoever, including what to boot from.
after finally finding the right document:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/interfaces/software/feature/guide/eesm_sw.pdf
• you have to first assign an IP address to the service module
• then use "service-module interface slot/port session" to talk to the switch
• then type "boot"
that's what I think they meant by the reloading error.
what drove me nuts was that you go back to the router using "CTRL-SHIFT-6"+x , but that just escapes you to the router. to disconnect you have to do "disconnect 1"
i was trying to use the "service-module interface slot/port session" to go back to the switch without disconnecting first, so it was denying permission.
to connect back without first disconnecting you just type 1 enter.
now to figure out how to configure the switch so that it load upon router load. likely just a basic configuration is necessary.
ah, what an exciting Friday it has been....

Subject: ether switch modules on 3900 not coming on line
OK, I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but when I boot my 3945 I get the following error:
ilpm_fault-5-ilpm_warning: ether switch network modules with poe support need to be reloaded to function properly
I have no idea how to reload this thing. And reloading the router doesn't help.
I'm hunting down for some documentation (go figure) as a starting point, but just thought someone might have gone down this path before.
