You should be fine then, but I would just to be safe make sure you have a good backup prior to the change.

You shouldn't have any impact as long as you're syncing on the same attribute, if you change the attribute used for the UserID you need to make sure you have a BAT export prior to be able to redo the device user associations and roles, etc.
