I think VMTools includes all of the OS drivers so yes, you'll want to do them.  At a minimum without them then VMWare won't be able to gracefully shut down the guest.

We’ve encountered a kind of strange issue in a non-production environment.  Occasionally our VM(created from the downloaded template) simply stops responding to network traffic and it also cannot ping anything, even servers on the same VM node.  Doing an ‘unsupported’ VMotion to a different VM Node restores connectivity.  Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
