[cisco-voip] Moving to 10 digit dialing

We actually took a modified device/line approach : external numbers are all allowed on the device and blocked on the line, internal numbers are allowed on the line. Works well.

I loose sleep only when the documentation doesn't match the system and/or there's a bug that prevents us from doing something.

OK, one other time I lost sleep.... You know those 10-10-XXX numbers they advertise for long distance bypass? Well, they're not really 10-10 numbers, they're 101 numbers with a XXXX suffix. Drove me nuts because the route filter stipulates the transit escape as a three digit number and the transit network as the four digit number. I thought they had it backwards. duh!

You would need to have translation patterns for internal ranges somewhere in your dial plan ahead of your @ patterns if you wanted to enable calls those number for all class of restrictions. If your uses are not dialing the full 11, they would be hitting a translation pattern anyway. There are multiple ways to skin this cat. It just depends what you are trying to accomplish with a few sleepless nights and some lab time it all works beautifully with the exception being transformation patterns and mid-call updates (aka transfers, etc).

Also, I think somebody mentioned it's difficult to deploy the device/line approach with 9.@ and route filters. I have deployed the device/line approach, i.e. allow all on the device + block on the line, and it works without issues.

I think this borders on MAC vs PC argument, where each side thinks they're right, where really, it's all about what you're trying to do.

But that being said, using the @ pattern is the right way to go. ;)

I agree with Lelio,

People who are afraid or frown on using route filters just don’t understand.

I’d like to see anyone who actually does TEHO and routes local calls as local without using route filters. The number of route patterns would be huge!!!

Let’s take calling from the Salt Lake City Rate Center, there is 526 Local Prefixes in the 801 and 385 area codes.

Those can be summarized in the last digit of the NXX to 93 Patterns.

Those patterns can be either 9 Route Filters and 9 route patterns, or 93 or 526 route patterns. Have a hard time thinking that 526 route patterns is easier to import and maintain!!!

Here’s the 9 route filters for all of the local calls in the salt lake rate center

i'm sure there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but I've used the @ macro with associated filters for the last number of years and it works like a charm. troubleshooting is not a problem as far as I know because it presents the matching regexp not the @ pattern when the match is made.

and with route filters it's very easy to exclude a particular route pattern without having to create an additional route pattern. it's also easier to add a non-contiguous pattern to a route filter as well.

as always, your particular application, desires, skill set and opinion will obviously dictate what you use, but i really don't think the @ pattern is the evil step-mother everyone makes it out to be.

I found a funny, and thoughtful post on this awhile ago:

Mark makes a good point here for the transition period when 7 digit dialing coincides with 10 digit dialing, 7 digit dialing can be all encompassing, and 10 digit dialing should only be for your area codes. Once the transition is complete, the 10 digit dialing should be all encompassing and the 7 digit dialing should be for specific digit strings.

That would be the way I would go anyways.

Sorry, make that $ not ! My brain is in Unix mode today. :)

dial-peer 7 < Support 7 digit dialing
[2-9]......$

dial-peer 10 < Support 10 digit dialing in your area
213[2-9]......$

dial-peer 11 < Support North American Long Distance
1[2-9].........$

On Dec 20, 2011, at 10:33 AM, Mark Holloway wrote:

For clarification, I assume this is for North America? If your area code is 213 you could create the following:

dial-peer 7 < Support 7 digit dialing
[2-9]......!

dial-peer 10 < Support 10 digit dialing in your area
213[2-9]......!

dial-peer 11 < Support North American Long Distance
1[2-9].........!

When your area switches to 10 digit and it is enforced by your telco, you could prepend 213 to the dialed digits in dial-peer 7 if needed.
