I ended up going to ibm.com and downloading the EFI/IMM update for the 7835I3. Then put a IP address on the IMM, http in and updated the EFI/IMM. 8.0(3a) booted up fine now doing the 8.5(1)SU1 upgrade during install.
This side problem is from trying to fix the original problem of getting "Unable to install patch(s) from host x.x.x.x, user jaarons, directory /: Unable to migrate user/local/platform/conf/platformConfig.xml file. Required. Ok.". Hoping the 8.5(1)SU1 will fix that problem....

CSCtj54331 IBM x3650M2,7835I3,7845I3 install fails - Could Not Detect Version
<B>Symptom:</B>
Fresh install fails with error "Could not detect the current version"
<B>Conditions:</B>
IBM x3650-M3 servers that are equivalent to MCS 7835I3 or 7845I3 are impacted due to implementation changes by IBM on recent firmware releases. If the 7835/45-I3 has an impacted firmware release, it will cause fresh install to fail with the error message.
<B>Workaround:</B>
Use the latest FWUCD (3.6.2-I, or later) posted on CCO to update uEFI firmware to build D6E149B or later.
Defect is closed with this comment:
on impacted servers install fails even before we can flash firmware, so adding new firmware to install/CUCM code will not help. Only solution is for these customers to use FWUCD offline and then update firmware before attempting install again.
We've seen a few instances where uEFI update was unsuccessful requiring IBM intervention.

Wes

I did install the Cisco FWUCD-3.6.1 before running the 8.0(3a) install, did that blow up the 8.0(3a) installer?
