I think people have chimed in, but to add my two cents:
• after you click perform sync button, you can go back and check until the button no longer says cancel sync
• we've got about 45,000 entries and i'm pretty sure it only takes about 15 minutes to do a sync (the first time might have taken quite a bit longer though)
The best thing to do is to get a windows PC that has AD rights/privileges and you can see for yourself live. We use this on many occasions to "prove" to our AD folks that a change hasn't been replicated in the AD system yet.

I have a cleint that swears everybody is in the same OU, but I still am unable to see a few accounts. Basically a stalemate where I have to prove they have it wrong.
