Yes, those changes were made for the sake of efficiency. Take a look at this thread...

I believe you can change it back in Unity, but in Connection, it's not modifiable.

With newer versions of Unity and Unity Connection, the MWI light does not got out until you delete or save the message does anyone know if there is a parameter to change 
it back so that the light goes out as soon as it's been read.
