You are correct for CUPC 7.0, however CUPC 7.1 supports the 8.5 server according to the Hardware and Software Compatibility Information for Cisco Unified Presence Release 8.x

I believe that CUP 8.0(4) is the last version to support the 7.x CUPC clients.

I upgraded CUPS from 7.0(2) to 8.5(3) and now CUPC 7.1(1a) clients can't chat each other, they now get the following message.
Rose, Bob did not receive your message because it could not be delivered. (3:14 PM)
Wireshark shows response back from CUPS server ip as 408 Request Timeout.
Only the server was upgraded, not the clients.
