[cisco-voip] Monitoring H323 Trunk Status

Once again, many thanks for the clarification Wes. I will look at monitoring the availability of the service using synthetic transactions. I suspect this is the only way to be sure that both CUCM and Rightfax are operational.

James.

ws: what are looking to monitor? If non-GK controlled then there really
isn't anything that remains active that is externally observable. The
thread remains active in the cm process but there's not real visibility
into that.
> I'm thinking of this in the context of a trunk out to a Rightfax server. I'm not sure whether these trunks hold a TCP connection open
ws: nope, TCP session is established per-call. CUCM still does not
support tunneling. Tunneling would allow multiple h225/h245 sessions on
a single TCP session. IOS has this but not CM.

ws: keepalives are exchanged for active calls based on a service
parameter. For some history see:
CSCsq17141 CUCM - Allow TCP KeepAlives for H.323 should enable H.245
TCP KAs also
> Incidentally, does an H323 Gateway device behave any differently from a trunk in this respect?
ws: There are subtle differences. CM sends out custom information over
h323 trunk that is not sent over h323 gateway. That custom information
is sent using standard h323 extensions. If an endpoint does not use a
fully compliant stack it may fail to parse the extension elements.
Using an h323 gateway avoids sending those elements. There may be other
subtle differences as well.
