[cisco-voip] ISR 2800 support in new CUCM 8.6 (and future 9.x)clusters

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention about the RAM is you have to be careful about its height. You don’t need so-called “low profile” DIMMs per se, but *some* standard-profile DIMMs are about 1 mm too tall to put the cover back on the router.
Like I said – very difficult to find.

I've been going through this myself for the past few months. Currently on CUCM 6.1 and want to jump to 8.6 so I can catch up on ATA deployments (grrr!).
You are right about the SRST versions. And yes it is technically the phone load that matters for SRST support, but of course CUCM version affects the phone load version support. There is also the matter of IOS versions for MGCP and SCCP (if you're using that). I don't think SIP or H.323 care as much about version but I'm not sure (not using it). Bottom line is, you cannot have CUCM 8.6 and ISR G1 unless you either upgrade the RAM or decide that you're okay with a technically-unsupported combination of software versions.
The RAM you're looking for is DDR1 PC2100 ECC unbuffered, in 256MB or 512MB sticks. 1GB sticks will not work. Buffered (registered) will not work. Up to PC3200 will work (it will merely be underclocked). Non-ECC will work if not mixed with ECC, but the router will complain. I feel ECC is important to have though.
I have been unable to acquire RAM meeting these specs from anywhere (except for paying $4000 to Cisco). It's all discontinued.
Long story short: Sent off the P.O. for 16 2900's yesterday. Lelio is right about the bundles being a decent value and about being able to step down to a smaller router.

I agree, but normally new SRST versions support newest firmware, so, at the end the CUCM version is tied somehow with the SRST version, because the CUCM dictates which firmware versions to be used. I’m talking about upgrade scenario, I think with new IP phones, restrictions are not as delimited as with old handsets.

Actually which srst version is not really important as long it supports the phone type in that srst version.
However this might change with 8.6 onwards, somehow default security is on. So far I haven't implement any site with srst yet with cm 8.6. I wonder will the security files in the phone create any issue when it fallback to srst such as the phone refuse to register due to wrong signature, etc.

Me neither, I think I’ll have to “open” the chassis to be 100% sure…

Hi,
Regarding the show platform, the show version displays 256MB RAM, but the show platform only 128MB in the Dimm 0, no information for the Dimm 1 (it doesn’t even appear). Can I assume there are two x 128MB RAM DIMMs?
Thxs,
Ruben

Try: show platform
It should give you something like this near the end:
________________________________
Dimm 0 SPD data :
Size of dimm = 512 Megabytes
<snip>
Dimm 1 SPD data :
Memory Slot Empty
RTC chip is DS1337

Regarding upgrading or refresh, Cisco makes the bundles quite competitive, and depending on your SRST requirements, you might be able to get a smaller router and accomplish the same things, saving money. It's a little like your old car, how much money do you put into it before you decide to buy a new one. In actuality, in this case, it's easier, the router is EOL and won't support new SRST versions. Period. (grrrrr).
I am confused with what you mean by the minimum SRST for CUCM. SRST and CUCM are not tightly connected as far as I know. What dictates what version of SRST you need is based on things like CUE (if installed), phone load version, and IOS version.
Hope that helps

Subject: [cisco-voip] ISR 2800 support in new CUCM 8.6 (and future 9.x) clusters
Hi,
I’m upgrading customer’s CCM 4.x cluster to CUCM 8.6. They’re using 28xx with SRST. In the compatibility guide it says we should go to, at least, SRST 8.6 for CUCM8.x. So I need to upgrade to 15.1(4)M, which requires more RAM that we have now. Is there any way to know from the CLI the DIMMs that are being used so I know if I should to buy 512DRAM DIMMs or 256DRAM DIMMs?
If you have faced this same scenario and as 28xx have been EoS on 1/11/11, do you think it is worth invest in DRAM and CF upgrade for this platform? Last SRST version (8.8) does not support 28xx and I think the same will happen soon with IOS. Also, we can have “inside” the 28xx some old cards already in the last stages of their lifecycle like VWIC first generation, PVDM2, AIM-CUE etc.
Then, upgrade or refresh with new 29xx? What’s your opinion (let’s leave apart the economic question ☺ ?
Thanks,
Ruben
