[cisco-voip] gigabit to the desktop!

Try pushing a REAL GIG per port through a Cisco switch at the same time and watch it crash……have seen that with State Of LA installs…and they threw out Cisco and went back to Nortel….which DO have a 48GB backplane….and DON’T crash…
Cheap is the word….is the word…is the word……with Cisco….until you need to “upgrade” though you are only running 15% capacity….Why do they sell soo cheap?? Think about it.

Well I probably should not discuss too much detail, but Cisco usually offers us very, very good deals on the 2960S switches. So switchports are cheap.
An Ethernet drop costs us about $100. So I guess you’re right, the numbers weren’t quite what I was thinking they were. But in most cases where there’s not already two drops, then the existing drop is old wire that wouldn’t support gigabit anyway.
And I do agree that gig-to-the-desktop is a noble pursuit. People who say “our utilization is nowhere near even 100 Mbps” aren’t grasping the concept that the whole point is for extreme burstiness, not for average utilization. When Windows downloads 150 MB or more of printer drivers at login, gigabit would be a huge help. For us, when students spend five minutes logging in, it is a very poor use of instructional time, especially in lower grades where a class period might only be 40 minutes.
I just don’t think that running the desktop through the phone is the way to achieve it. Especially when it would mean replacing existing phones.

Really?
List price difference between a 7942 and a 7945 is $95.
On the 2960S switches a GIG POE port averages $152 list. (With the Low being $135)
On the 2960 Switches a FE POE port averages $99 list.
So for $148 list you’ve got a Gig phone and network with a nice color screen. That is less than the cost the cost of a second switch port and a 2nd cable run. But I agree you need the 2nd cable anyways.
It is much faster to do most everything on gig network vs 100mb. Serialization delay makes a noticeable difference, not just the faster throughput. Years ago an average desktop couldn’t fill a 100mb pipe, now anything can, and some can fill 1000mb.
My 2 cents.

Cisco phones are too damn expensive. I still buy 7942’s and could put in a second Ethernet drop and use up another switchport for less money than buying gigabit phones. We are gradually “forklifting” all our cabling (one whole building at a time – nice thing about working in an industry that totally shuts down 2 months of the year) for other reasons, so by the time gig-to-the-desk is a serious concern, every spot will have two drops anyway – just like TIA/EIA 568 says you’re supposed to.
But actually haven’t done any gig-to-the-desk yet. Well… I guess technically we’ve done a bit but I put “speed auto 10 100” on all of it. The switches were chosen ‘cause they were a good price not ‘cause they happened to be gigabit. :-)

I can imagine that several of your organizations are going through some network equipment refresh and installing gigabit connectivity to the desktop. What in this case are you doing for telephones? Are you performing forklift upgrades in this areas and installing gigabit phones? Or are you replacing them as required? How are you dealing with the disparity in service level when you compare a monochrome 7940/42 with a colour 7945?
General comments are welcome....
