[cisco-voip] 6961 Phone

Unity Connection has an SMPP provider configuration page. After finding a provider that met the requirements, we set up a NAT translation for our server behind the firewall and allowed it outbound connections to the SMPP provider's network/server.

Although there are quite a few SMS providers out there, you have to find those that will support SMPP and on top of that, the BIND_TRANSMITTER protocol rather than just BIND_TRANSCEIVER. After that, it's just the value added service they provide that will make the difference. I like to run a professional/enterprise service whenever possible, so that means covering all bases such as replies to the text, logging, reports, etc.

Unfortunately, the project that would have been the biggest proponent of this feature has yet to get off the ground, so really, it's just me using it right now to ensure it keeps working and is ready to go.

Lelio what did you use for the SMS texting. Did you use Unity or were you able to use MS Exchange? Just wondering as that would be a good option here but we are using MS Exchange for our voice mail so we have the indication in our email but an SMS text to the user would be helpful in some instances.

Thanks

Terry

PS still gathering info on UC on UCS.

I would second the email notification option as well. If they don't want to use email, you could use SMS. I finally got that working in a pilot and it's pretty neat. The information sent is quite good.

EM would require each user get their own phone or log in to the main phone on an individual basis and in your use case I bet would lead to constant fighting over who's logged in.

For multiple users sharing a single phone I doubt you are going to find anything sexy out there. What you need to focus on is a phone with a good display capable of handling the number of lines you need. I'd highly recommend getting one of each model you are evaluating so you can confirm with your eyes how each one will behave.

If you want to go the notification route look at what you can do in the voicemail system for setting notification destinations, etc.

Interesting idea! So instead of them having to check the phone in the main room, their cell phone could notify them that they have a voicemail? DO I understand that correctly?

You could also configure the users for extension mobility, that would be a no cost solution.

I have a situation where we place a (currently) 7961 phone in a common room. Each person is assigned one of those lines, and when they come in they are expected to check the screen and see if they have voicemail.

Of course, we are now getting a 7th person!!

I was wondering if the 6961 could be a solution? Does the button assigned to a user change color designating voicemail? Will this phone work with UCM 8? I saw the SPA501G (8 lines), but unsure if it works with UCM or only Cisco's Small Business Pro Unified Communications 320??

Thank you in advance!

David
