hmmm, come to think of it, the first paragraph sort of sounds like you can't use this image!

Here's my take (because I'm slightly interested as well):

from the description:

8.6(2a) US Export Restricted - full encryption capabilities (non-bootable) - For upgrade from 8.x+. Upgrades from 6.1(4)+, 7.1(3), 7.1(5) need to be requested via PUT (www.cisco.com/upgrade) or purchased to obtain necessary license

from the compatibility matrix:

8.6(2a)

Direct upgrade:

8.6(2), 8.6(1a), 8.6(1), 8.5(1), 8.5(1)SU3, 8.5(1)SU2, 8.5(1)SU1, 8.0(3a)SU3, 8.0(3a)SU2, 8.0(3a)SU1, 8.0(3a), 8.0(3), 8.0(2c)SU1, 8.0(2c), 8.0(2b), 8.0(2a), 8.0(2), 8.0(1), 7.1(5b)SU4(restricted), 7.1(5b)SU3(restricted), 7.1(5b)SU2(restricted), 7.1(5b)(restricted), 7.1(5a)(restricted), 7.1(5)SU1a(restricted), 7.1(5)SU1(restricted), 7.1(5)(restricted) , 7.1(3b)SU2, 7.1(3b)SU1, 7.1(3b), 7.1(3a)SU1a, 7.1(3a)SU1, 7.1(3a), 7.1(3), 6.1(5)SU3, 6.1(5)SU2, 6.1(5)SU1, 6.1(5), 6.1(4a)SU2, 6.1(4a), 6.1(4)SU1, 6.1(4)

looks like you're good to go as long as you get the licenses....

This is probably a dumb question (since when has that stopped me before right?)

Can I use the UCSInstall_UCOS_8.6.2.20000-2.sgn.iso image from cisco.com to upgrade from 7.1.5, assuming I have an 8.x upgrade kit? In-place upgrade, no new hardware or anything.

My upgrade kit DVD is 8.6.1, I'd like to just skip up to the latest release instead of upgrading to 8.6.1 and then doing another round of patches/reboots to get there.
