The process would be a lot simpler if Cisco supported 7.1.3 on virtual for the purpose of upgrading to 8.x, sort of the reverse of the bridge upgrade for 8.6.2 on older hardware.
The process I used below was a pain in that I had to find two servers that could operate as the swing servers, get temporary licensing for those, install 7.1.3, DRS, upgrade to 8.6.2, DRS, then do the whole 8.6.2->8.6.2 patch install on VMWare, and finally DRS again with final licensing.
If I could've installed 7.1.3 unsupported on VMWare, but then upgraded to the latest 8.6.2 on VMWare and the system automatically moved into a supported state, that would've simplified my life greatly.

This is exactly what I'd like to see people doing. Go straight from 7.x to 8.6(2)SUx (whatever the latest is) and then put that into production on whatever platform you end up on.
Aside from migration issues the complications that can arise with SBD seem to happen more frequently with the 8.x to 8.x upgrade than with 7.x to 8.x. When you are changing hardware at the same time eliminating that second upgrade reduces the risk of SBD issues.

I'm curious why each of you would do an upgrade to 8.6(2) base when SU1 is out there on cisco.com<http://cisco.com><http://cisco.com>? You still have to order the 8.6(2) upgrade via PUT to get the license but there's no reason to do the 2-step upgrade when SU1 is the desired destination (or should be).

That particular version has a few bugs around SELinux. It also has that nasty bug where you can’t upload MOH files, which apparently manifested itself with your license files. You’ll definitely want to get to 8.6(2a)SU1.

The server didn't have write rights to the license directory, they added it and it works fine now...

only time I've seen that is if i didn't have a good application (upgrade license), it would take the DLU and Nodes without error but would do exactly what you're seeing... In my case I was pulling the licenses off a jump drive to a customer PC and then uploading them, i pulled them directly off my OWA email and they worked? think maybe the CM 8 lic file is corrupt? perhaps have them issue another upgrade license?

We just upgraded a CUCM 7.1.5 system to 8.6 (using bridge method)...
After you upload the licenses, they do not show in the drop down, but you cannot upload them again (says they already exist...)
When you reboot the pub, it says no licenses are loaded and kills the CallManager service on all nodes.
You can repeat the cycle, re-upload the licenses and start the services... but if you reboot, the licenses disappear again...
Any ideas?
