TAC can also RMA you physical media for older releases that don't show up in PUT any longer (anything that's reached end-of-sale). In an emergency after the RMA is created then the bootable ISO can be posted for you to download.
If you are on a CUCM ES then those ISOs are all bootable.

The OS and application files are identical, you’re only inserting a 10KB to allow for boot. I guess I can’t think of a situation where TAC would be inclined to even try to figure that out.
Can you show me a documented case?

If you make a non-bootable image, bootable, and you have to get support, you better freshen up that resume. The fact is tac can determine if a hacked bootloader was used. There are numerous documented cases where a hacked boot loader causes entire enviroments to be rebuilt. Therefore, I would only do this is a lab environment.

Hi,
You can download any version of CM from cisco site and CCO account is needed. After download you can burn ISO to physical media (DVD) or you can directly mount iso if using VMware. The ISO and/or DVD is not bootable and only can be used for up-gradation of existing CUCM. Bootable media comes with purchase of new CUCM servers only.
There are unofficial ways that you can make 8.6 iso bootable at your own risk and use it on VMware. You will need following to things to make iso bootable.
1. Cucm Iso.
2. Redhat linux v5 (32 bit) iso
3. Ultra ISO software (or any other iso software you prefer)
Open the redhat iso in ultra iso and extract the boot file and save it. Now load the cucm iso in ultra iso. Insert the save bootable file in cucm iso and save the cucm iso. Now mount or burn the iso and make a clean install of cucm.

The one you want is on the Cisco site under
Downloads Home --> Products --> Voice and Unified Communications --> IP Telephony --> Unified Communications Platform --> Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) --> Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 8.6 --> Unified Communications Manager / Cisco Unity Connection Updates.
Not bootable but other than that it is the full thing. If you need bootable then you have to use PUT. The one I got from PUT recently was 8.6(2a). For 8.6(2a)SU1 you need to download from the above.
