You must be on version 8, because version 7 had a 10 or 20 minute timeout
on TFTP upgrades.
Peer firmware upgrades might help a little (the first phone will suck, but
the rest should go quick)
What's the RTT packet time from the TFTP server to the Phone?
You could throw a load server out there if you needed too.
You could even make a local router fake being a load server if you have to.
