I think even "funnier" than what you say with 8.6 is v7.1(5). From what I recall, if you upgraded to 7.1(5) you remained on DLUs both physically and licensing wise and continued to buy DLUs by telling the order desk, I upgraded, so I can buy DLUs. 

BUT, if you installed (or bought) 7.1(5) from scratch , then you had to deal with user based licensing and the DLUs stuff was in the background.

Even with 8.6, you’d have licensing changes. With 8.6, it is licensed based on subscription of users, not DLUs. Except the catch is that even though it is licensed based on users, the software itself still uses DLUs. When you buy a user, you get a license file with a corresponding number of DLUs in it. Nobody at Cisco can tell you what that number is, and if you try to get any help related to your DLU counts, they’ll just get confused and incorrectly tell you that you’re out to lunch because 8.6 doesn’t use DLUs and is licensed based on users. Totally asinine that it’s licensed based on one system, but the software itself enforces licenses based on a totally different system. The licensing for 8.6 is a gongshow because the Cisco people only understand user-based, the software only understands DLU-based, and there’s no documentation reconciling the two. 

With 9, even though you still have all the headache of changing licensing systems, at least you end up with only a single licensing system in the end. So there is less opportunity for cluelessness and confusion. 

Based on past experience, Cisco will probably completely re-engineer all their licensing very soon anyway, since it’s almost getting to the point of being understandable, which they seem to be against. :-\

Thanks Stephen and Ryan. I have attended some of the CUG webinars on upgrading to 9. I figured that I would avoid the licensing changes by only going to 8.6.2. We are a small organization (under 300 users) and my primary motivation for upgrading is to remain on a supported version. I’ll read up more on moving to version 9 instead.

I’m interested in migrating to CUCM 8.6.2 running on VMs considering that 7.1.x is getting closer to the end of support. I’ve been working to determine the appropriate process to follow, but have a question that is not addressed in the documentation that I reviewed. Both of our current servers are model 7835-H2, which is only supported for use in a bridge upgrade, not for production use. The system requirements for 8.6.x call for 4 GB RAM and 146 GB disks. Our servers currently have 2 GB RAM and 72 GB disks. Will I be able to use these servers for the bridge upgrade even though they don’t meet these requirements?
